Course Description:
The URLA Medi-cal Peer Support Specialist Training, approved by CALMHSA, focuses on delivering peer-to-peer education and support to individuals who self-identify as having personal experience with the recovery process from mental illness or substance use disorder. This includes individuals who have utilized these services or those who are parents, caregivers, or family members of someone with a mental health condition.
During the training, participants acquire essential behavioral health skills that encompass the 17 Peer Specialist core competencies established by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Upon successfully completing the 88.7-hour training, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion, which they can include in their application to take the Medi-cal Peer Support Specialist Certification Exam.
Who Is Eligible?
Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
Education: Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent is necessary.
Experience: Individuals should self-identify as having personal experience with the recovery process from a mental illness or substance use disorder. This can be as a consumer of these services or as a parent, caregiver, or family member of a consumer.
Technology Access: Individuals must have access to and the ability to utilize a computer, laptop, and internet connection.
Time Commitment: Candidates must be able to commit to and actively participate in the entire 80-hour live online training sessions.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the 17 core competencies encompassing concepts such as hope, recovery, wellness, advocacy, consumers and family members, psychiatric rehabilitation, addiction recovery principles, cultural competence, trauma-informed care, group facilitation, self-awareness, co-occurring disorders, conflict resolution, professional boundaries, employment preparation, safety and crisis planning, navigation of services, documentation skills, confidentiality, and digital literacy.

Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and other relevant confidentiality rules and regulations as they apply to the role of a Peer Support Specialist.

Demonstrate active listening skills to effectively understand and respond to the needs and concerns of peers seeking support.

Apply person-centered approaches to foster a collaborative and empowering relationship with peers, honoring their autonomy and choices in their recovery journey.

Effectively utilize Zoom and other digital tools to enhance service delivery in their role as Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists.

URLA provides an Asynchronous learning environment where students can engage in the 80-hours of required training asynchronously, at their own pace. Due to the nature of our asynchronous modality, the URLA has a rolling admissions policy that accepts & trains students year-round. All instructor-led virtual lessons can be scheduled at the students convenience during the training hours, days and dates described on the right.

Meet the instructor
Ishmael Muhammad
Ishmael Muhammad has been a teacher, instructor, and facilitator since 2018. He has a Masters Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelors in Anthropology and has been involved in the recovery landscape since 2008. Serving as a high school teacher helped Ishmael recognize the urgent need for comprehensive understanding and support for individuals grappling with mental health illnesses and behavioral challenges. Beyond the classroom, Ishmael devotes his time and expertise to working directly with those affected, providing guidance and compassion.
